President Marcos Directs Government Offices to Lead Energy Conservation Efforts

Unique Times

In response to rising oil prices and regional tensions, the Philippine government mandates energy and fuel reduction across all government agencies.

In light of escalating oil price shocks caused by tensions in the Middle East, the Philippine government, under President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., has implemented strict energy austerity measures across all government offices. Executive Secretary Ralph Recto confirmed that these measures require mandatory compliance from the entire bureaucracy, including state-owned corporations. The directive emphasizes a decisive shift toward reducing energy demand, positioning government offices as leaders in energy conservation efforts.

Within the first week of implementation, over 1,000 government offices began enforcing the policy focusing on limiting the use of air-conditioning, reducing non-essential lighting, and managing office equipment use to conserve power. Fuel consumption has also been tightly controlled, with most government vehicles prohibited from operating except those necessary for public safety and health services.

Amidst concerns over energy stability, President Marcos declared a national energy emergency on March 24. At present, the country holds approximately 45 days of fuel supply and is procuring an additional one million barrels as buffer stock. Furthermore, Executive Order No. 110 empowers the Department of Energy to take necessary actions to safeguard energy supply stability and mitigate impacts from international market disruptions. These measures aim to ensure the country’s sustained energy security amid global uncertainties.
