Operators of water activities and seafood businesses in Boracay have increased prices to offset the impact of weekly oil price hikes, while tourists continue to visit the island despite higher costs.
Boracay, a renowned Philippine tourist destination, is currently experiencing price increases in water activities and seafood offerings due to escalating fuel costs. Local operators report that rising fuel expenses have significantly impacted their operations, leading them to adjust their rates to maintain services and support staff wages. Popular activities such as power sailing and jet ski rides have seen price increments; for instance, a 15-minute power sailing session now costs PHP 2,000, up from PHP 1,800, while a 30-minute jet ski ride increased from PHP 3,800 to PHP 4,000. Diesel prices have more than doubled, contributing to operational cost pressures. Seafood prices have also risen sharply, with crabs, lobster, and fish like lapu-lapu and tanigue becoming more expensive. Despite these increases, tourists reportedly remain undeterred, acknowledging the fuel price situation. The local government of Malay has clarified that a PHP 10 fare increase for sea transport passengers, effective April 16, is temporary and will revert once fuel prices stabilize. Authorities are monitoring unauthorized price hikes among local businesses and require any rate adjustments to be published in advance. This situation reflects ongoing economic pressures on tourism-related sectors caused by fluctuating global oil markets.
