The 16th Asian Regional Conference of Ikebana International took place at Conrad Manila, bringing together around 140 exhibitors and practitioners of ikebana—the Japanese art of flower arrangement—from the Philippines and various countries. The event was hosted by the Ikebana International Manila Chapter 108 and carried the theme “Sama-sama,” a Filipino word meaning togetherness.
The conference featured an exhibition showcasing diverse styles, colors, and designs of ikebana, alongside workshops, cultural activities, and demonstrations. One of the highlights was a grand demonstration scheduled by Hiroki Ohara, the fifth headmaster of the Ohara School of Ikebana.
Participants such as Maria Liza Guingona shared how ikebana serves as a form of natural healing and meditation, emphasizing its connection to nature by using garden trimmings in arrangements inspired by Philippine landscapes. Other practitioners highlighted the spiritual and creative aspects of ikebana, noting how it fosters friendship and cultural exchange through flowers.
The president of Ikebana International reiterated the organization’s motto, “Friendship through Flowers,” underscoring the unity among diverse schools of ikebana represented at the conference. The organization, established in 1956, aims to connect individuals worldwide who have a passion for nature and the art of flower arrangement.
The conference showcased the variations and interpretations within ikebana disciplines while demonstrating the common bond shared by members through their love of flowers. The event concluded on October 4, 2026, further strengthening cultural ties and appreciation for this unique art form in the region.
