Malacañang Palace clarified on February 26, 2026, that the National Unity Party (NUP) retains full autonomy in deciding whether or not to back the impeachment complaint filed against Vice President Sara Duterte. According to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro, the NUP is not beholden to the President or the current administration in making this decision, highlighting that “it’s their decision, they have the freedom to decide.” Castro also suggested that the party is likely to make a choice they perceive as best for their political interests.
Previously, the NUP stated it is unlikely to support the impeachment unless compelling new evidence emerges. The party emphasized that they have not encountered fresh, substantive evidence beyond what has already been examined in prior inquiries and hearings.
