White House border czar Tom Homan dismisses Democratic demands to reform Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) despite growing backlash and a funding impasse for the Department of Homeland Security.
WASHINGTON — Tom Homan, the White House border czar under the Trump administration, on Sunday rejected Democratic proposals to reform the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). This comes amid escalating criticism regarding ICE tactics and an ongoing partisan deadlock over homeland security funding.
Democratic lawmakers have urged reforms including ending racial profiling, banning masks, and restricting officers from entering private homes without judicial warrants. However, Homan labeled these demands as “unreasonable” during an interview on CBS News’ Face the Nation. He denied that ICE agents engage in racial profiling, asserting their stops are based on “reasonable suspicion,” and argued that masks are necessary for officers’ identity protection, in contrast to many law enforcement officers who operate without them.
A recent Supreme Court decision permits officers to factor characteristics such as skin color or language spoken into reasonable suspicion assessments.
Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) encountered a partial shutdown due to the funding stalemate, though essential operations continue. Democrats have blamed Republicans for refusing to support DHS funding without ICE reforms, while Republicans accuse Democrats of stalling negotiations for political theater.
Negotiations remain stalled as both congressional chambers enter a break. Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) attributed the White House’s willingness to negotiate to public outcry, while Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) criticized Democratic tactics as insincere.
The controversy over ICE’s practices continues to fuel national debate and protests across the United States.
