Visayas Power Grid to Experience Rotating Brownouts on May 15, 2026

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines warns of scheduled power interruptions due to supply shortfalls from multiple power plant outages.

Electricity consumers connected to the Visayas power grid in the Philippines are expected to face rotating brownouts on May 15, 2026, from the afternoon until evening. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued an advisory indicating that these load interruptions, or manual load dropping, may be implemented between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to maintain the power system’s integrity amid supply deficiencies. The power outages, affecting multiple electric cooperatives and utilities across the Visayas region, are due to a significant supply shortfall of approximately 195 megawatts (MW), stemming from several power plants being offline or operating at reduced capacity. Currently, 15 plants are on forced outage since May 2026, with others offline since previous years, collectively rendering 883.1 MW unavailable. Additionally, recent tripping incidents at various power units further worsened supply. NGCP emphasized that the schedule for power interruptions might be canceled if demand decreases below projections. The grid operator also encouraged all consumers to use electricity prudently during this period to help stabilize the system. This situation highlights ongoing challenges in meeting peak demand in the Visayas power grid and the importance of system reliability and maintenance.
