Increasing Overseas Education Expenses Widen Nepal’s Service Account Deficit Despite Robust Remittance Inflows

Nepal continues to receive strong remittance inflows from its overseas workers; however, rising education costs abroad are intensifying the country's service account deficit.

Nepal has been experiencing a notable surge in remittances sent home by its expatriate workforce, a crucial source of foreign currency supporting the national economy. Despite these robust inflows, the country faces a growing challenge as the escalating costs of education abroad significantly contribute to widening the service account deficit. Education-related payments—such as tuition fees, accommodation, and other living expenses for Nepali students overseas—are escalating, creating greater financial pressure on the service account balance of payments. Economists note that while remittances bolster Nepal’s foreign exchange reserves, the expanding education expenditure abroad offsets some of these gains, complicating the country’s external accounts. This development calls for careful policy considerations to manage overseas education finance while sustaining steady remittance flows from the Nepali diaspora, which continue to underpin household incomes and national economic stability.
