Authorities implement strict security protocols across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region to ensure peaceful and orderly conduct of the 2026 parliamentary polls.
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has implemented heightened security measures as it holds its first parliamentary elections on September 14, 2026. The Commission on Elections (Comelec), together with police and local authorities, have intensified efforts to maintain peace and order amid concerns of potential clashes that could arise between supporters of different candidates.
In Cotabato City and various parts of Maguindanao del Sur and Maguindanao del Norte, police presence has been significantly increased around polling centers. A one-entrance and one-exit policy has been enforced in some voting locations to better manage voter flow and avoid confrontations. Voters, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women, have been given expedited access to polling stations, with entry regulated in batches to prevent overcrowding.
Ahead of the polls, election officials required teachers serving as electoral board members to present valid appointment papers before receiving election materials to ensure the integrity of the electoral process. Substitute electoral board members were put on standby to address absenteeism, which has been an issue in past elections.
Some delays in ballot distribution occurred in areas like Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte, due to rechecking and validation processes after incorrect ballots were initially distributed. Despite these challenges, early voting proceeded with the correction of errors and resolution of logistical concerns.
Marawi City, a previous hotspot for election-related unrest, has seen increased security measures, particularly at the Marawi City Pilot School—the city’s largest polling center. Police and security personnel enforce strict crowd controls to prevent disturbances similar to those experienced during the 2025 elections.
To ensure swift response to incidents, the Office of Civil Defense-BARMM elevated its alert status from Blue to Red Alert as of Monday morning, coordinating closely with government agencies for contingency preparedness.
