El Niño May Impact Catch of Small Pelagic Fish, Philippine Fishers Group Warns

Unique Times

A potentially strong El Niño event could alter fishing conditions and reduce catches of small pelagic fish such as galunggong and sardines, affecting local fisheries.

The Association of Fresh Fish Traders of the Philippines has alerted the public to possible impacts from a potentially strong El Niño phenomenon on fishing activities, particularly on the catch of small pelagic fish species. President Jonjon Santos explained in a recent radio interview that while current fishing conditions remain normal, changes are anticipated as sea surface temperatures rise.

El Niño, characterized by the warming of ocean surface temperatures, can significantly affect marine life, especially fish species sensitive to temperature changes in the water column. According to Santos, small pelagic fish such as galunggong (round scad) and sardines are particularly vulnerable because they rely on stable water temperature gradients, or thermoclines, for their habitat. Historical data cited by the group referenced the strong 1983 El Niño event, after which fish production dropped significantly.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts a 1 to 2 degrees Celsius increase in average temperatures across the country during this El Niño event. Santos also noted that the fishery sector is currently in a closed fishing season from November to February, which limits production during this period and has so far prevented unwarranted price increases in fish products.

The group continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for potential impacts on the fishing industry and local consumers reliant on small pelagic fish for livelihood and nutrition.
