Senator Joel Villanueva expressed willingness to participate in a special session of Congress called by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., emphasizing the need to prioritize public service over political division amid pressing legislative matters.

Senator Joel Villanueva stated he is prepared to attend a special session of Congress if called by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. In a video statement delivered during a gathering of the Jesus Is Lord Church Worldwide, founded by his father Eduardo “Brother Eddie” Villanueva, the senator emphasized their duty to fulfill obligations under the Constitution.Should a special session be convened, Villanueva affirmed, “We will be there.” He highlighted the importance of unity at this time, pointing out that political factionalism should be set aside to address vital legislative proposals, including support and rehabilitation efforts for areas affected by the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.Villanueva is part of a Senate group led by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, which has not attended Senate sessions since June 1 until the congressional recess last week. The senator clarified that this is not a time for political camps but for serving citizens and protecting institutions.Villanueva also noted the special session would facilitate approval of pending bills requiring third and final readings and the confirmation of delayed military appointments amid Senate leadership conflicts. He expressed concern that Senate staff have been negatively impacted by ongoing leadership disputes and institutional security measures, stating that staff should not be caught in political struggles.Reports indicate the Palace is ready to call a special session despite the sine die adjournment if requested by acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian. Presidential press officer Claire Castro acknowledged the administration’s recognition of Gatchalian’s leadership. No indication was given if Villanueva would shift allegiance to support Gatchalian, which would make him the 13th senator to do so.
