BOC Reminds Travelers to Declare Amounts Over ₱50,000 When Entering or Leaving the Philippines

The Bureau of Customs emphasizes the legal requirement for declaring Philippine and foreign currencies exceeding specified limits to facilitate transparent and smooth processing at ports.

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) of the Philippines issued an official reminder to travelers regarding the declaration of monetary amounts when entering or leaving the country. According to existing regulations, individuals are permitted to carry foreign currencies, including cash and equivalent travel funds. However, if the total amount exceeds the equivalent of $10,000 US dollars in any foreign currency, the traveler must declare the full amount to the BOC upon arrival or departure. This declaration can be made through the electronic e-Travel System prior to their trip or at designated customs counters in airports and seaports.

For Philippine peso currency specifically, travelers may carry up to ₱50,000 without prior approval. Amounts exceeding this threshold require a written authorization from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and must be declared to the BOC. Such BSP authorization is typically granted only for specific purposes such as numismatics, currency awareness through museums or exhibits, and testing or calibration of money handling machines. The rule applies to all peso-denominated money forms including banknotes, coins, and checks.

Failure to properly declare Philippine currency exceeding the ₱50,000 limit without BSP clearance can lead to confiscation by customs authorities. The BOC highlighted that these regulations have long been in place to ensure transparency, protect the financial system’s integrity, and facilitate efficient processing at entry and exit points in the country. Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno stated that declaring currency is a standard procedure that neither restricts carrying lawful funds nor complicates travel, seeking to make the process clear and convenient for all travelers.

Travelers are advised to use the e-Travel platform for customs and currency declarations prior to their arrival or departure to accelerate processing at the borders.
