Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala triumphed over 17-year-old British wildcard Mika Stojsavljevic in a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win during their Round of 32 match at the Toray Pan Pacific Open held in Japan on Monday. Despite facing three break points in the seventh game of the second set, Eala displayed resilience and composure to close out the match effectively. With this victory, Eala progresses to the Round of 16 where she will face Australia’s Talia Gibson, aiming to reach the quarterfinals for the first time during the Asian Swing of the WTA tour. The match saw Eala start aggressively, dominating the first set with a 5-0 lead before Stojsavljevic briefly fought back. The second set was more contested, with both players exchanging long rallies. Stojsavljevic, who won the 2024 US Open Girls’ Singles title, showcased her potential by capturing two of the next three games, including a service ace, but Eala’s strong finish with consecutive forehand winners sealed her advancement. Eala now prepares to challenge the experienced 38-year-old Gibson, currently ranked 38th in the Women’s Tennis Association standings.
