Impeachment Counsel Says VP Sara Duterte is Duty-Bound to Attend House Hearings

The lawyer involved with the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte asserts that she is constitutionally obligated to attend the House proceedings, though doubts remain about her attendance.

Vice President Sara Duterte faces impeachment complaints related to alleged misuse of funds and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his family. The House justice committee has found the complaints sufficient to proceed and scheduled hearings starting March 25. Attorney Dino de Leon, representing the impeachment complaint that was set aside, stated at the Saturday Media Forum that the Vice President is “duty bound” by the Constitution to respond to the allegations. He emphasized that the impeachment process is a serious constitutional and accountability matter that requires respect for legislative institutions like the House and Senate. However, De Leon expressed skepticism that Duterte will attend the hearings, predicting she might avoid answering questions and suggest the proceedings are merely political. Duterte’s lawyer confirmed receipt of the hearing invitation but has yet to decide on attendance. De Leon criticized previous responses by the Vice President as lacking substance and stressed the importance of accountability for public officials. Hearing dates are set for March 25, April 14, 22, and 29. GMA News Online has sought comment from Duterte’s camp but received none as of publication.
