DOLE Suggests Flexible Work Options Amid Rising Fuel Prices

Unique Times

The Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) encourages private employers to consider flexible work arrangements such as four-day workweeks and telecommuting to alleviate operational costs due to surging oil prices linked to Middle East tensions.

In response to rising fuel prices triggered by escalated conflicts in the Middle East, the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has reminded private sector employers of the option to implement flexible work arrangements. These arrangements include adopting a four-day workweek or allowing employees to work from home, aiming to reduce operational expenses and safeguard workers’ welfare. Alvin Curada, Director of the Bureau of Working Conditions (BWC), emphasized that such arrangements are voluntary under DOLE’s framework. He noted some economic sectors might not be able to implement these changes universally due to operational constraints. The four-day workweek entails reallocating the standard 40 working hours across four days instead of five, with extended hours from Monday to Thursday if Fridays are off. The work-from-home scheme permits employees to work remotely on Fridays while maintaining regular on-site hours Monday through Thursday, depending on the nature of the work. Since the recent joint military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran began on February 28, fuel prices have seen a significant increase, impacting operational costs for businesses. Employers who decide to adopt these flexible arrangements must file a report via DOLE’s online compliance portal once agreements with employees are made. This initiative aims to help mitigate the economic impact on businesses and employees amid international uncertainty affecting fuel prices.
