The Senate impeachment court resumes proceedings to consider the House prosecution's move to drop the bribery charge against Vice President Sara Duterte as the trial nears its conclusion.
MANILA — On Day 39 of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial, the Senate impeachment court is set to review a critical development regarding the prosecution’s decision to drop Article III, the bribery charge, from the case. The court acknowledged receipt of the prosecution’s formal request from October 6 and will deliberate on this matter before proceeding further.
Presiding Officer Francis “Chiz” Escudero announced that the session will resume at 1 p.m. to hear final manifestations from the prosecution panel, responses from the defense team, and address any related administrative concerns. Should the prosecution choose to rest after officially withdrawing the bribery allegation, the court will allow the submission of their formal offer of evidence.
Up to this point, the prosecution has presented evidence on three of the four Articles of Impeachment. These include Article IV concerning alleged grave threats against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and others; Article I alleging misuse of confidential funds; and Article II dealing with purported unexplained wealth amassed by Duterte. The latest witness for the prosecution was financial forensic analyst Atty. Alexander Cabrera.
The defense is expected to respond to the prosecution’s move and outline their position accordingly as the trial advances towards its concluding phases. This development marks a significant moment in the high-profile case that has drawn extensive public and media attention in the Philippines.
