Palace Denies Involvement in Senator Mark Villar’s Shift to Majority, Responds to Alan Cayetano’s Claims

Malacañang refutes Senator Alan Peter Cayetano's assertion that the Marcos administration influenced Senator Mark Villar's move to the Senate majority bloc, emphasizing senators' independent decision-making.

Malacañang Palace has firmly denied any involvement in Senator Mark Villar’s recent decision to join the Senate majority. This response came amid claims by Senator Alan Peter Cayetano suggesting that the Marcos administration played a role in Villar’s political realignment. At a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro underscored that senators, as duly-elected officials, exercise independent judgment and cannot be coerced into political decisions against their will. She commented, “Senators have their own minds and decisions. They cannot be dictated, for if they were merely directed and devoid of independent thought, the public should not have elected them.”

Senator Cayetano acknowledged Villar’s shift during the briefing and expressed understanding of the political dynamics that often prompt such changes. He noted the increasing importance for the administration to maintain a supportive majority within the Senate. However, the Palace challenged Cayetano to reflect if such influence over senators was experienced during former President Duterte’s administration, implying no such dictation occurred then either.

Villar’s move has increased the Senate majority’s count to 14 members. Nonetheless, Castro clarified that this does not necessarily indicate Villar’s distancing from Vice President Sara Duterte, who is currently facing an impeachment trial, nor does it forecast the trial’s outcome. She referenced Villar’s previous vote during impeachment court proceedings, where he supported lowering the conviction threshold, demonstrating his independent stance.

Castro further characterized Villar’s shift as a positive signal, suggesting a growing belief among senators towards the current administration’s legislative priorities. She emphasized that this alignment could foster smoother passage of key bills before President Marcos’ term concludes. This development highlights the complexity of political alliances and the importance of acknowledging the autonomy of individual lawmakers within the Philippine Senate.
