Senate Official Points Out Discrepancies in Sara Duterte and Husband’s Reported Net Worth and Bank Transactions

Senate impeachment court presiding officer Francis Escudero highlights mismatch between Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband’s declared net worth in their Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALNs) and the high volume of their bank transactions dating back to 2007.

During the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte held on October 6, 2026, Senate impeachment court presiding officer Francis Escudero raised concerns over a significant discrepancy between the reported net worth of the Vice President and her husband, Manases Carpio, and the volume of their bank transactions. Based on the joint Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALNs) submitted from 2002 to 2025, their declared net worth does not correspond with millions of pesos in bank transactions identified under their names.

Escudero pointed out that from 2007 to 2025, approximately PHP 4.4 billion in covered and suspicious bank transactions were recorded under the couple’s names. However, when the figures in their SALNs for the same period were tallied, their total declared net worth amounted to only PHP 840 million. This indicates that the bank transactions outpace their declared assets by at least five times.

During the trial, Escudero referred to the testimony of Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura, who acknowledged difficulty in explaining how the bank transactions and SALNs could be reconciled. Between 2022 and 2025 alone, the AMLC revealed PHP 424 million in deposits and withdrawals via their bank accounts, yet their combined net worth as per SALNs for these years was only PHP 336 million.

Escudero stressed that even assuming no expenses were incurred and all assets were deposited intact in the bank accounts, the declared net worth still would not match the volume of transactions recorded. When pressed for possible explanations, Buenaventura admitted he could not offer a clear rationale for the discrepancy.

These revelations form part of broader concerns raised in the impeachment trial surrounding issues of declared wealth and unexplained bank activity involving the Vice President and her husband. The Senate continues to deliberate on these matters as part of its proceedings.
