Senator Robin Padilla Clarifies His Belief in Christian Communism and Muslim Muakhat

Senator Robin Padilla distinguishes his advocacy of Christian communism and the Muslim Muakhat system from armed communist movements during the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

In a recent session of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte in the Philippines, Senator Robin Padilla clarified his ideological stance following his admission of being a communist during the hearings. Padilla emphasized that the communism he believes in is distinct from the armed communist insurgency that has existed for around 50 years in the country, which he says has cost many lives, particularly of young students.

He elaborated that his reference was to the original concepts of communism reflected in the practices of early Christians and Muslims, specifically identifying Christian communism and the Muslim Muakhat system practiced in Medina. According to Padilla, these systems represent the “true socialist and communist practices” rather than the violent, armed struggle associated with modern communist groups.

During the trial, Senator Padilla also discussed “Oplan Romanov,” an operation he said targeted prominent anti-communist leaders, including families of Marcos and Duterte, suggesting that Vice President Sara Duterte could be at risk as well.

The senator’s comments have sparked discussions, including criticism from fellow actress and activist Angel Locsin, who questioned Padilla’s previous silence when she was red-tagged, highlighting the complexities surrounding political affiliations and labels in the country.

Padilla further dismissed his previous belief in armed communism, emphasizing a nonviolent interpretation rooted in historical religious communal practices. He recounted his own past accounts of taking up arms in the mountains to fight for the country but differentiated that experience from his current views.

This clarification situates Padilla’s stance within a socio-political discourse on the nature of communism in the Philippines, particularly distinguishing between violent insurgency and peaceful communal sharing inspired by religious traditions.
