Filipino tennis player Alexandra “Alex” Eala was defeated by Italy’s Jasmine Paolini with scores of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the Wimbledon Round of 16 match held on Monday. Paolini started strong, taking a 4-1 lead in the first set, but Eala fought back, winning three of the next four games to close the set at 5-4. Nevertheless, Paolini clinched the first set 6-4. Eala recovered in the second set, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead by winning three consecutive games. She managed to close the set on her serve, pushing the match into a deciding third set. The final set was closely contested, tied at 3-3 at one point, but Paolini’s experience showed as she won three of the last four games to seal the victory and move on to the quarterfinals. Prior to this match, Eala had notable wins against Renata Zarazúa, Maya Joint, and defending champion Iga Świątek. Her advancement to the Round of 16 marked her as the first Filipino woman to reach this stage in Wimbledon during the Open Era. The quarterfinals will also feature No. 12 seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, who won her match against Ashlyn Krueger.
