Several taxi drivers seeking aid to cope with high fuel prices were found missing from the official subsidy recipient lists, prompting authorities to address data inaccuracies and distribution processes.
A recent report highlighted that multiple taxi drivers aiming to receive a temporary fuel subsidy worth P5,000 were not included in the official distribution lists compiled by authorities. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) acknowledged receiving incomplete driver lists from operators, which has led to many drivers lining up without being recognized as beneficiaries.
To manage the situation, two separate payout lines were created: drivers listed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) would collect subsidies through the LTFRB, while those not on these lists were directed to receive assistance from the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza emphasized the reliance on operators to submit comprehensive driver lists, stating that the current data provided is inadequate. He called for complete and accurate submissions to ensure all legitimate drivers receive aid.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez assured that efforts were underway to accommodate drivers waiting outside distribution centers, particularly senior citizens, by providing them access, seating, and amenities such as water for comfort during the wait.
Authorities confirmed that all legitimate taxi drivers who hold proper licenses will eventually receive their subsidies. Lopez remarked on the necessary verification steps to confirm driver status and licensing before subsidies are disbursed.
Meanwhile, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian criticized transportation network companies (TNCs) for submitting faulty and duplicate lists, describing them as “junk lists.” He highlighted the challenges faced by social workers who were subjected to complaints due to errors beyond their control. Gatchalian has set a deadline for TNCs to provide clean, final lists and indicated that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will review accountability measures for those responsible for the inaccuracies.
Overall, the authorities stressed their commitment to ensuring that all qualified taxi drivers receive the intended fuel subsidy despite the initial distribution hurdles.
