International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol alerts that the ongoing Middle East conflict has precipitated a severe energy crisis impacting the global economy, with wide-ranging effects for all nations.

The global economy currently faces a significant threat due to the energy crisis stemming from the conflict in the Middle East, particularly related to disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, according to International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol. Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, Australia, Birol emphasized that no country will be immune to the ramifications of this crisis if it persists. He likened the situation to a convergence of two oil crises and a gas market collapse, highlighting the gravity of the impact on supply chains and energy prices worldwide. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas shipments pass, has seen near-total blockage, causing a spike in oil prices and fueling economic uncertainty. The conflict has intensified over the past weeks, with escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, including threats and demands for the reopening of the passage. Birol urged global collaboration to address and resolve the crisis swiftly to mitigate consequences. This development holds particular significance for countries with overseas workers and economies dependent on energy imports, underscoring the interconnectedness of energy security and economic stability globally.
