The Philippine presidential palace elaborates on President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.'s official trip to the United States despite Middle East tensions impacting oil prices locally.
Malacañang defended President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.’s ongoing working visit to the United States amidst prevailing tensions in the Middle East, which have contributed to fluctuations in oil prices affecting the Philippines.
The President’s visit in New York City is primarily aimed at engaging in high-level discussions at the United Nations. A key agenda during this trip includes campaigning for the Philippines’ bid to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.
Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro emphasized that this timing is critical for showcasing the Philippines’ suitability for this role. She told reporters, “This is the perfect time for the President to demonstrate to UN members that the Philippines deserves a non-permanent seat on the Security Council.”
In light of the Middle East conflict, which has driven up oil prices domestically, President Marcos has likewise encouraged government agencies and citizens to adopt energy-saving measures, including a mandated four-day workweek to conserve fuel resources.
Responding to critiques from former presidential spokesman Harry Roque regarding recent concerts and events at Malacañang amidst the regional tension, Atty. Castro clarified that such events were not extravagant but intended to promote Filipino culture and talents. These monthly events, often held at the Goldenberg Mansion, invite students and showcase local artists with the support of the First Lady. “These gatherings are not lavish; they celebrate Filipino talents and culture and aim to inspire the youth,” she explained.
The official stance underscores that the President’s diplomatic mission and cultural initiatives continue responsibly despite geopolitical challenges affecting energy and economic conditions.
