DOE Issues Show Cause Order Against 54 Gas Stations Over Price Hikes Amid Middle East Conflict

The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) has taken regulatory action against 54 gasoline stations accused of unjustified price increases following the Middle East conflict, warning of legal consequences for violators.

The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) has issued show cause orders to 54 gasoline stations for allegedly raising fuel prices amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This was announced by Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro, who spoke during the coverage of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos’s work visit to the United States. Castro warned fuel station operators against exploiting the situation, emphasizing the government’s intent to enforce penalties on those who do so. “The President wants cooperation, not exploitation. Those who take advantage will face consequences, including lawsuits and possible revocation of business permits,” Castro stated. Energy Secretary Sharon Garin elaborated that some stations have hoarded fuel and refused to sell, anticipating price hikes, which DOE will act against by filing cases that may lead to closures. “Currently, 54 stations are facing charges, and this number is increasing,” Garin confirmed. These measures come as part of government efforts to stabilize fuel prices and protect consumers amid external geopolitical tensions affecting oil supply. The DOE’s actions demonstrate a firm regulatory stance to prevent exploitative practices in the fuel market.
