Unique Times

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) confirms ongoing voter registration activities at Philippine diplomatic posts in the Middle East despite escalating tensions due to recent military operations.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on March 2, 2026, that overseas voter registration for Filipinos residing in the Middle East continues uninterrupted, even as conflicts escalate in the region. Philippine embassies and consulates remain operational, offering consular services inclusive of voter registration for the upcoming 2028 national elections. This registration period began on December 1, 2025, and will extend until September 30, 2027. The continuation occurs amid recent joint military actions by the United States and Israel targeting Iran, which heightened regional tensions. Comelec advises Filipino expatriates to remain vigilant, stay updated with reliable information from verified sources, and heed official announcements from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Philippine diplomatic missions. The Department of Foreign Affairs has reported a Filipino population of approximately 2.5 million in the Middle East, primarily in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, with close to 800 Filipinos in Iran. Tragically, a Filipina caregiver from Pangasinan, Mary Ann Velasquez De Vera, was confirmed killed amidst the conflict. The Israeli Embassy has formally extended condolences for her death. Comelec urges overseas voters to continue participating in the electoral process and to prioritize safety and verified communications during this volatile period.
