The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources highlights the success of the annual closed season in enhancing the sustainable yield and volume of galunggong (roundscad) in Palawan waters.

The Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) announced that the annual closed fishing season for galunggong (roundscad) has played a crucial role in increasing the sustainable supply and production volumes of this staple fish. The fishing ban, implemented since 2015, applies from November 1 to January 31 each year in key breeding grounds in the West Philippine Sea and Northern Sulu Sea, allowing the species to thrive undisturbed. BFAR National Director Elizer Salilig stated that adherence to this science-based conservation measure demonstrates that sustainability and fishing industry growth can coexist. According to the National Stock Assessment Program, the ban contributed to a 55.1% increase in galunggong catch in the third quarter of 2024, reaching 3,363.75 metric tons, making it the largest contributor to MIMAROPA’s commercial fisheries production. The policy also reduced fishing mortality and the catch rate of immature fish, with average fish length improving from 16.8 cm in 2015 to 17.6 cm in 2024, indicating a healthier population. The fishing community in Palawan has been commended for compliance, securing the ecosystem, food supply, and fisher livelihoods. Additionally, fish traders expect galunggong prices to decrease starting March 2026, benefiting consumers and fishermen alike.
