The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) has begun upgrading the Train Operating Control Panels on LRT-2 trains to improve communication systems, leading to temporarily reduced train availability and longer waiting times.
The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) in the Philippines has commenced an upgrade of the Train Operating Control Panels (TOCP) on trains operating along Line 2 (LRT-2). This marks the first replacement of the TOCP since the line’s opening in 2004. The existing analog system is being replaced with a new digital TOCP designed to enhance the onboard Public Address (PA) system, automating announcements and important passenger communications for improved efficiency and clarity.
The upgrade process will take approximately five days per train, resulting in fewer trains available on certain days and slightly longer waiting periods for commuters during the transition. Specifically, only nine trains will be operational from Tuesday to Sunday, with all ten trains running on Mondays to accommodate increased passenger traffic at the start of the week.
To manage increased passenger volume at stations due to reduced train frequency, LRTA will implement appropriate crowd control and passenger assistance measures. These modernization efforts target older trains, some of which have been in operation for over 27 years, to enhance the reliability, efficiency, and safety of the LRT-2 system.
Commuters are advised to expect minor delays and increased crowding on some days as the upgrades proceed, with the LRTA committed to maintaining smooth operations throughout this improvement phase.
