The Department of Energy, National Power Corporation, and Aboitiz Power Corporation collaborate to assess potential nuclear power plant sites, including the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, aiming for future inclusion in the country’s energy mix starting 2032.

The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) has officially announced a collaboration with the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) and Aboitiz Power Corporation to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study for potential nuclear power generation sites. According to the DOE, this partnership was discussed with both government and private sector stakeholders under a proposed memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will guide the study efforts.

The feasibility study will assess site suitability, safety, security, regulatory compliance, and infrastructure needs for possible locations of nuclear power plants. The sites under consideration include the already established but currently inactive Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) and other candidate locations within the Philippines.

This initiative aligns with the Philippines’ long-term Nuclear Energy Plan and Roadmap, seeking to explore safe, secure, and sustainable nuclear energy options to be integrated into the national energy mix beginning in 2032. The DOE emphasized that the study and its subsequent development will adhere to the standards and guidelines set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In its statement, the DOE highlighted the importance of this collaboration as a strategic step toward enhancing energy security, resiliency, and the advancement of clean energy development for the Filipino people. The partnership also reflects a commitment to evidence-based and internationally aligned approaches to nuclear energy development, ensuring both safety and regulatory preparedness.

This project marks a significant development in the country’s broader efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, supporting goals of sustainability and clean energy transition in the coming decades.
