Fishermen in Bulan, Sorsogon, resorted to discarding Tamban fish on the shore after failing to sell their catches amid abundant supply and low market demand, compounded by halted canning operations during the Holy Week.
In Bulan, Sorsogon, a significant quantity of Tamban fish was discarded on the beach after fishermen were unable to sell their catch. According to the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) stationed in Bulan, the fishermen arrived on a recent Saturday with a large haul of Tamban fish. However, due to an oversupply in the market and diminished demand, many fish remained unsold. Furthermore, the temporary suspension of canning operations during the Holy Week holiday further reduced sales opportunities. Fish prices plummeted to roughly six pesos for every five kilos, leading to economic losses for the fishermen. The unsold Tamban fish eventually died on the shore. This situation reflects challenges faced by the local fishing industry in matching supply with market demand, especially during festive periods when processing plants may halt operations.
