MMDA Reports Reduced Holy Week Travel Due to Rising Fuel Prices

Unique Times

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) observed a decrease in passenger numbers during this year's Holy Week travel period, attributing it to the impact of rising oil prices.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has reported a noticeable decline in passenger volume at major terminals and along key roads during the Holy Week exodus in the Philippines. According to MMDA-Swift Traffic Action Group commander Edison Nebrija, the expected surge in travelers at terminals and along main thoroughfares such as EDSA was significantly lower compared to previous years. This reduction has been linked to the ongoing increase in fuel prices, which appears to have discouraged travel during the holiday period.

Despite the leaner travel volume, the MMDA is maintaining its operational readiness by deploying 2,476 personnel and 581 pieces of equipment to manage traffic during the Holy Week. A strict no-absent, no-leave policy will be enforced on April 1, 2, and 6 to ensure sufficient manpower, with a skeletal force deployed on April 3 to 5.

Additionally, the MMDA will station personnel at key bus terminals including Cubao, Pasay, Caloocan, and the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX). To facilitate travel to the provinces, provincial buses from North Luzon will be allowed to use EDSA until the Cubao terminal, while buses from South Luzon may proceed to Pasay and PITX terminals. This temporary measure is set to be in effect from 9 p.m. on Holy Wednesday, April 1, until 6 a.m. on Monday, April 6.

The MMDA continues to monitor the travel situation closely despite the reduced passenger flow, ensuring safe and efficient transportation during this important holiday period.
