Malacañang assures that the ongoing demonstration at the EDSA People Power Monument is not seen as a threat to the Marcos administration, highlighting respect for peaceful assembly coupled with enforcement of laws where necessary.
Malacañang Palace stated on Tuesday that the ongoing rally at the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City does not pose a threat to President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.’s administration. Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro remarked during a briefing that the President respects citizens’ rights to free expression and peaceful assembly but maintains zero tolerance for any abuse. Castro explained that the President is confident that his actions are for the benefit of the Filipino people. Any interests from small groups that could interfere with governance should not impede the administration’s law enforcement efforts.
Approximately 10,000 protesters gathered demanding accountability and transparency. The President was informed early Tuesday and instructed authorities to apply maximum tolerance while ensuring that laws are enforced if broken.
Castro emphasized that the administration is closely monitoring the security situation and the impact on commuters, citing significant traffic congestion caused by the surprise rally, which affected workers, students, and emergency services using EDSA. She noted that peaceful rallies using public roads require proper permits and coordination with the government to allow for adequate preparation.
Additionally, any violations of laws during the gathering will be investigated and those responsible held accountable. The President canceled his scheduled morning engagements to directly monitor the situation and its effects on citizens. Castro referred to those inconvenienced but not participating in the protest as ‘collateral damage.’
