Malacañang officially acknowledges the Senate leadership of Acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian, rejecting other claims amid ongoing Senate conflicts.
Malacañang Palace, represented by Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro, affirmed on Sunday that it recognizes solely the Senate bloc led by Acting Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian. This declaration follows recent weeks of internal disputes within the Philippine Senate regarding its leadership.
Castro emphasized that no other Senate leadership is acknowledged by the Executive Branch, stating that all Senate communications, including requests for special sessions, should be directed to the President through Gatchalian’s recognized leadership. This recognition extends from Malacañang as well as from the House of Representatives and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.
The statement came in the context of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s insistence on his own leadership, which Castro dismissed, urging him to stop as no official body recognizes his claim.
The leadership change occurred after 12 senators elected Gatchalian as Senate President Pro Tempore and Acting Senate President on June 3, a move that followed the boycott of sessions by the Cayetano-led bloc, which had cited challenges to the Senate’s independence.
Castro underscored the need for genuine leadership serving public interest, free from self-serving alliances. She also addressed allegations of Malacañang’s interference in Senate affairs as unfounded, asserting the President’s respect for the separation of powers.
Senator Cayetano has alleged coordination between some senators and Malacañang in the leadership reshuffle, a claim not corroborated by official palace statements. The ongoing dispute also involves the arrest of Senator Jinggoy Estrada on plunder charges, further complicating the Senate’s internal dynamics.
The situation remains fluid as the Senate grapples with leadership legitimacy and accusations of external influence, with the Palace standing firmly behind Gatchalian’s leadership as the only legitimate Senate authority.
