DOLE Reminds Employers to Grant Double Pay on Maundy Thursday

Unique Times

The Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has advised that workers on duty during Maundy Thursday are entitled to double their regular daily wage as it is considered a regular holiday.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) of the Philippines has issued a Labor Advisory reminding all employers to comply with the law granting double pay to workers who perform duty on Maundy Thursday. This day is officially recognized as a regular holiday, entitling employees on duty to 200% of their usual daily wage. Employees who are not on duty but are present or on paid approved leave on the workday immediately before Maundy Thursday remain entitled to 100% of their daily wage. If the day before the regular holiday is a non-working or rest day, employees may still be entitled to holiday pay if they report to work or are on paid leave on the preceding day. Additionally, work beyond the standard eight hours during a regular holiday that coincides with an employee’s rest day requires employers to pay an extra 30% of the hourly rate. This advisory emphasizes the DOLE’s commitment to enforcing labor rights during the Holy Week observance period. Employers are urged to adhere strictly to these provisions to ensure fair compensation.
