In light of anticipated fuel price increases driven by geopolitical tensions, the Philippine National Police is evaluating the potential adoption of electric vehicles for patrol operations.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on March 5, 2026, that it is contemplating the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into its patrol fleet. This initiative comes as a strategic response to expected hikes in fuel prices resulting from supply disruptions linked to tensions between the United States and Iran. PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized the significant dependency of police operations on fuel, describing the conflict in the Middle East as a catalyst for reassessing patrol vehicle procurement policies. However, the PNP plans to conduct thorough studies and assessments to determine the practicality, reliability, and suitability of electric vehicles for daily police operations to ensure that fast and reliable response capabilities are not compromised. This caution aligns with the agency’s commitment to public safety as a top priority. Concurrently, the Department of Energy’s Oil Industry Management Bureau reported potential fuel price increases of up to 10 Philippine pesos per liter amid the ongoing global oil market disruptions. The PNP’s exploration of electric patrol cars reflects a proactive approach to operational sustainability amid these economic challenges. President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. has expressed intentions to urgently enact measures granting authority to reduce excise taxes on oil products to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs.
