President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. recently celebrated a major breakthrough in the construction of the Metro Manila Subway. After inspecting the site between North Avenue and Quezon Avenue stations, the President acknowledged the successful tunneling achievement, where the tunnel boring machine broke through, connecting the two stations with a one-kilometer long underground passage. This event marks significant progress in the ambitious subway project, which plans to include 17 stations along a 33-kilometer route spanning from Valenzuela City to Pasay City. Once completed, the subway is expected to dramatically reduce travel times, cutting the commute from Valenzuela to Ninoy Aquino International Airport to just 40 minutes from the current average of one and a half hours. The subway is projected to serve approximately half a million passengers daily and involves deep tunnels constructed by highly advanced tunnel boring machines. The project is estimated to be completed by 2031, with substantial funding support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). President Marcos expressed optimism about the project’s progress despite the physical demands of the site inspection. This advancement underscores the Philippine government’s commitment to enhancing mass transit infrastructure and alleviating traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
