The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) has released a comprehensive analysis focusing on the long-term effects of labor migration from the Philippines. The study, titled “Napakasakit, Kuya Eddie!” provides a detailed look into how the movement of Filipino workers abroad shapes not only household economies but also social dynamics and emotional wellbeing in their home communities. Labor migration remains a significant aspect of the Philippine economy, with millions of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) contributing to remittance flows that support families and national development. However, the PIDS report highlights that, beyond the economic benefits, many families face emotional hardships such as prolonged separation and challenges in child-rearing. The research emphasizes the need for policies that address the psychosocial support for migrants’ families and promote sustainable community development. This study contributes valuable insights for government agencies, policymakers, and migration stakeholders focused on improving the welfare of overseas workers and their families.
