Nepal’s critical trade link with China through the Tatopani border point has been severely affected again as China indefinitely closed Zhangmu Port, located across from Tatopani, due to potential flooding risks in the Bhotekoshi River. This follows the earlier flood-caused damage at the Rasuwagadhi border route and recent disruptions on the Arniko Highway impacting Tatopani.
The Tatopani Customs Office confirmed that Chinese authorities have temporarily ceased customs operations, suspended cargo movement, and relocated administrative staff to safety. The closure was communicated via email, with Chinese officials stating they will provide further notice upon reopening.
The ongoing closures have led to significant cargo backlogs, notably around 60 containers carrying fruit valued at approximately Rs400 million stranded at Nyalam and Tingri for over 45 days. These containers remain refrigerated, but delays already pose risks of increased storage costs that could elevate fruit prices in Nepal. Importers have voiced concerns that the continued closure will disrupt fruit imports vital for Nepal’s Dashain and Tihar festivals, potentially affecting market supply and prices.
With both northern trade routes experiencing interruptions, Nepal’s options for overland trade with China remain constrained during a crucial period for bilateral commerce. Traders and business associations call for prompt resolution to mitigate economic impact and maintain supply chains ahead of key market seasons.
