The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has provided P3,000 fuel subsidies to more than 96,000 small-scale fisherfolk to mitigate the impact of fluctuating global energy prices and advance climate-smart aquaculture initiatives.
The Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) announced on July 1, 2026, that it has successfully distributed direct fuel subsidies amounting to P3,000 each to over 96,000 Filipino small-scale fishers nationwide as of June 2026. This outreach represents 65.71% of the program’s projected target under the Fuel Assistance to Fisherfolk Program, created to help fishers cope with the challenges posed by volatile global energy prices.
BFAR National Director Elizer Salilig emphasized the need for a responsive, adaptive, and forward-looking bureau that anticipates and addresses problems before escalating into crises. As part of long-term measures to reduce dependency on the energy grid, BFAR is heavily investing in climate-smart aquaculture infrastructure, including solar-powered technology stations, hybrid solar ice plants, and water impounding facilities in off-grid coastal municipalities. These interventions aim to reduce operational costs, minimize post-harvest spoilage, and preserve fish product quality without reliance on costly fossil fuels.
Additionally, BFAR’s comprehensive supply chain improvements involve distributing fiberglass boats, expanding Community Fish Landing Centers, and providing high-quality fish seeds—including resilient species such as crayfish and giant freshwater prawns—to enhance income stability for fishing communities.
These efforts have earned BFAR recognition as the second top-performing unit in the Department of Agriculture’s Performance Appreciation System for Operating Units (PAS-OU) Awards. The bureau continues to prioritize sustainable innovation and direct support to Filipino fisherfolk amid ongoing energy market uncertainties.
