NPCI International and Nepal Clearing House Launch Real-Time Cross-Border Remittance Link Between India and Nepal

A new real-time remittance system aims to facilitate faster and more efficient money transfer between India and Nepal, benefiting migrant workers and their families.

NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of India’s National Payments Corporation (NPCI), in collaboration with Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL), has launched a real-time cross-border remittance link connecting India and Nepal. This initiative allows for faster, secure, and more cost-effective money transfers for Nepali migrant workers sending remittances from India back to Nepal. The new corridor employs modern payment infrastructure to enable instant fund transfers and settlement, enhancing convenience for remitters and recipients alike.

Official statements from NIPL and NCHL emphasize their commitment to strengthening financial ties and supporting economic growth by simplifying remittance flows. The system specifically targets the large population of Nepali overseas workers in India, addressing previous delays and high transaction costs associated with cross-border remittances.

This development is expected to positively impact migrant families relying on remittances for daily expenses and development needs. Financial experts note that real-time remittance corridors contribute to more transparent and formal financial transactions, reducing dependence on informal channels.

While official sources highlight the technical benefits and strategic importance of the link, reports from migrant communities stress a need for continued outreach and education to maximize utilization and ensure equitable access.

The launch marks a significant step in India-Nepal financial cooperation, with potential expansion of similar corridors to other countries where Nepali diaspora are active.
