President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. concluded a successful four-day visit to Japan, highlighting strengthened bilateral ties and significant investment pledges.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has returned to Manila after a four-day state visit to Japan, which he described as “very constructive and highly productive.” The visit marked the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan, providing an opportunity to both celebrate past cooperation and outline future partnerships.
During his stay, President Marcos met with Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, emphasizing the enduring friendship between the two nations. A key highlight was his engagement with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, where both leaders agreed to upgrade their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This new framework extends collaboration beyond traditional sectors such as security and trade to emerging areas including energy security, supply chain resilience, decarbonization, artificial intelligence, and space cooperation.
Their discussions also covered regional and global issues like developments in the South China Sea and the Middle East, reaffirming shared commitments to ASEAN unity and centrality. Japan expressed its support for the Philippines’ bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
The President met with the Filipino community in Japan and oversaw signing agreements to avoid double taxation, boost agriculture and fisheries collaboration, improve access to quality health services, and advance human resource development.
Negotiations are set to begin on a General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) and maritime boundary delimitation to support joint security and economic goals.
Notably, the visit yielded US$3.4 billion in investment pledges covering various sectors, with additional commitments worth approximately PHP 56.3 billion from major corporations to invest in semiconductors, advanced electronics, precision manufacturing, and shipbuilding. These investments are projected to create around 10,300 jobs for Filipinos.
Overall, President Marcos highlighted that the engagements strengthened confidence in the Philippine economy and opened new avenues for sustainable growth and development.
