The Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development has begun distributing financial aid to transport network vehicle service drivers affected by rising fuel prices in Metro Manila, with plans for further nationwide expansion.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) of the Philippines has initiated the distribution of cash assistance to Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS) drivers in Metro Manila who have been economically affected by recent increases in fuel costs. According to DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, approximately 27,000 TNVS drivers across the National Capital Region are expected to receive a cash aid amounting to 5,000 Philippine pesos. The payout process began at the San Dionisio Sports Complex in ParaƱaque City, targeting over 1,200 beneficiaries under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program. Similar distributions are underway in key cities including Quezon City and Caloocan, where thousands of drivers have lined up, some arriving before dawn and foregoing work trips to secure their payments.
The DSWD clarified that the beneficiary list is prepared by transport network companies and validated by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), with DSWD solely responsible for the distribution of funds. Secretary Gatchalian advised drivers who were not included on the lists to consult their respective transport network companies for explanations instead of visiting payout centers directly. Concerns have been raised regarding the exclusion of temporary drivers, although the DSWD dismissed claims that funding limitations were the cause.
The Aid to Individuals in Crisis Situation program is slated to expand nationwide following the Holy Week holidays, extending assistance to jeepney drivers, delivery riders, and motorcycle taxi drivers on a phased schedule. Prior distributions included aid to about 100,000 tricycle drivers earlier in March. The government urges drivers to verify their inclusion and payout schedules through the LTFRB website or their companies to ensure smooth processing of assistance.
