The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines announced red and yellow alert statuses for the Visayas power grid on Thursday, October 29, 2026, citing insufficient power supply due to multiple plant outages.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has declared red and yellow alert statuses for the Visayas power grid on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following the unavailability of several power plants. According to the NGCP advisory, the red alert will be active from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., while the yellow alert will cover 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A red alert indicates that the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirements. Meanwhile, a yellow alert is issued when the available operating margin does not meet contingency requirements.
The Visayas grid’s available capacity stands at 2,408 megawatts (MW), against a peak demand of 2,555 MW, with 796 MW currently unavailable. The NGCP identified key contributing factors as the unavailability of major coal plants—TVI 1, TVI 2, and KSPC 1—and limited power imports from Mindanao caused by planned outages of GNPK 4 and TSI 2.
Furthermore, the NGCP reported that multiple plants have been on forced outages for varying lengths of time, ranging from recent outages in October to ongoing issues dating back several years. Additionally, 18 power plants are operating at reduced capacity. These constraints have led to tighter supply conditions in the Visayas region, necessitating alert status declarations to inform stakeholders and consumers.
The NGCP continues to monitor the situation and urge power consumers to exercise conservation measures during the alert periods to minimize the risk of power interruptions.
