Visayas Power Grid Faces Red and Yellow Alerts Due to Plant Outages and Limited Imports on October 27, 2026

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the Visayas power grid will undergo red and yellow alert statuses on October 27, 2026, caused by unavailable power plants and reduced imports from Mindanao, posing risks of supply shortfalls.

The Visayas power grid in the Philippines will experience periods of red and yellow alert on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, due to significant unavailability of power plants within the region alongside limited power imports from Mindanao, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported. The NGCP advisory specifies that the grid will enter yellow alert from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., escalate to red alert from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and revert to yellow alert status from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The grid’s available capacity stands at 2,452 megawatts (MW), just below the peak demand of 2,482 MW, with approximately 861.2 MW remaining offline. Key factors influencing these alerts include the unavailability of major coal-fired power plants such as TVI 1, TVI 2, and KSPC 1, as well as planned outages at GNPK 4 and TSI 2 limiting power transfers from Mindanao. Currently, 15 power plants are on forced outage, some for several months or years, while 16 others are operating below full capacity. Red alert signifies an insufficient power supply to meet consumer demand and the grid’s regulating requirements, potentially leading to forced outages or controlled load shedding. Yellow alert indicates that the operating reserve is inadequate to cover contingencies but may still meet current demand. The NGCP continues to monitor the situation closely and coordinates with power plants and relevant authorities to manage supply and maintain grid stability during these critical periods.
