Visayas Power Grid Placed Under Yellow Alert Due to Reduced Plant Availability

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has declared a yellow alert for the Visayas power grid on October 15, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. amid reduced power plant availability and derated capacities, raising the risk of power interruptions.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the Visayas power grid will be under a yellow alert on October 15, 2026, between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. This alert indicates a potential risk of power interruptions due to insufficient operating margin to handle contingency requirements on the transmission grid. The current operating power is at 2,557 megawatts (MW), closely matching the peak demand of 2,479 MW. Several factors contributed to this alert, including the unavailability of major coal plants such as PEDC 3 and KSPC 1, limited power imports from the Mindanao grid due to unplanned and planned outages at various plants (FDC 3, GNPK 4, TSI 2), and numerous forced outages across multiple plants spanning several months and years. Specifically, six plants were on forced outage as of October, with additional plants offline since previous months and some operating at derated capacities totaling 645.6 MW of unavailable capacity. NGCP continues to monitor and manage these conditions to maintain grid stability and minimize disruptions to consumers in the Visayas region.
