Indonesia’s Wellness Tourism Sector Set for Significant Growth with Bali as the Flagship

Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism outlines strategic focus on wellness, gastronomy, and maritime tourism, leveraging Bali's established sectors to boost nationwide tourism.

Indonesia’s tourism sector is preparing for a substantial expansion in wellness tourism, building upon Bali’s reputation as a leading destination. The Indonesian Minister for Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, announced in late 2025 that the government will prioritize three key areas for development during the forthcoming electoral term: gastronomy, wellness, and maritime tourism. Bali serves as the primary platform for these initiatives due to its established tourism infrastructure and appeal.

Gastronomy tourism is a strong suit for Bali, with a vibrant food scene that integrates local traditions and international influences. Maritime tourism is also receiving significant investment, particularly at Benoa Harbour in Bali, which has been transformed into a maritime tourism hub capable of hosting large cruise liners and luxury yachts.

Wellness tourism, already a prominent sector in Bali, is set to expand with governmental support aimed at attracting tourists seeking health, stress relief, and spiritual connection. The Ministry defines wellness tourism through seven components: eco-nature tourism, herbal medicine, healthy cuisine, lifestyle and fitness, arts, spiritual healing, spa and ethno-spa. This holistic approach includes cultural activities such as traditional dance lessons, herbal drink preparation, cooking classes featuring medicinal local ingredients, and participation in spiritual rituals like the Melukat water blessing at Tirta Empul Temple.

Minister Wardhana emphasized the aim to attract quality tourists who stay longer and invest more in their travel experience. The wellness tourism strategy is positioned to provide both relaxation and engaging cultural participation, ensuring a comprehensive and memorable visitor experience. Through these plans, Indonesia seeks to sustain and grow its tourism industry by catering to evolving global travel trends focused on health and wellbeing.
