The Japanese government provides financial support to enhance local agricultural processing facilities, benefiting women farmers and promoting rural development in Myagdi district.
KATHMANDU — The Government of Japan has extended a grant of $43,175 (approximately NPR 6.6 million) to support the development of a ginger and timur processing centre in Nepal’s Myagdi district. The grant agreement was signed on September 7, 2026, at the Japanese Embassy in Kathmandu between Japanese Ambassador Maeda Toru and Padam Raj Shrestha, Executive Director of the Livelihood Education and Development Society Nepal (LEADS Nepal).
Funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP), the initiative targets the construction and renovation of processing facilities and the installation of modern equipment. The project primarily benefits a women farmers’ cooperative in Beni Municipality composed of around 600 members engaged in ginger and timur cultivation.
Myagdi district is renowned for producing ginger and timur, which are vital to the local agrarian economy. Enhanced processing capabilities are expected to improve product quality and efficiency, enabling farmers to generate higher-value products, increase their incomes, and enhance their livelihoods.
The Embassy of Japan highlighted that this project supports sustainable rural development and women’s economic empowerment in the region. This grant also commemorates the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and Japan in 2026.
