Despite rising fuel surcharges and airfare price hikes, Ninoy Aquino International Airport anticipates 1.3 million passengers during the Holy Week travel period in the Philippines.
The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in the Philippines is preparing for a significant surge in travel during the Holy Week, with 1.3 million flights booked despite recent increases in airfare and fuel surcharges. The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) reports a marked rise in passenger numbers compared to last year, reflecting sustained demand even amid a national energy emergency.
Travelers have experienced various challenges. One notable case was that of Richelle Tanjay, who was denied boarding by an immigration officer for lacking an affidavit and proof of relationship with her trip sponsor, despite presenting her own funds and travel documentation. The issue highlights tightened immigration scrutiny, especially for first-time solo travelers.
Families such as the Olasos also encountered logistical challenges, being advised to travel in batches for their first flights, complicating accommodation and care arrangements upon arrival. Passengers continue to flock to the airport, with some purchasing tickets just a day before travel, possibly unaware of the impending surcharge increases.
Starting April 1, fuel surcharges for international flights will rise to Level 8, exceeding 6,000 Philippine pesos, with the possibility of reaching Level 15 due to rising jet fuel prices. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have assured the public of sufficient jet fuel supplies for the next three months. The MIAA General Manager Eric Ines emphasized that fuel surcharges are separate from base fares, impacting total travel costs.
Pilgrims and travelers remain hopeful amidst the challenges, with many undertaking trips for religious purposes or family visits. The authorities continue to prepare for the busy travel season, balancing operational capacity and passenger service during this peak period.
