President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. welcomed Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay at Malacañang Palace, marking the first official meeting between the two leaders. They discussed enhancing diplomatic, trade, and skills development ties.
On March 19, 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines received Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay in a courtesy visit at Malacañang Palace. This was the inaugural occasion of a Bhutanese head of government being officially hosted by the Philippine president at the palace. Both leaders discussed strategies to bolster bilateral relations, including the organization of diplomatic representation for non-resident ambassadors between the Philippines and Bhutan.
They affirmed their mutual commitment to cooperate in worker skills training and upskilling, facilitated through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). President Marcos emphasized the need for new partnerships post-pandemic, extending beyond tourism and cultural exchange to include people-to-people connections, trade, and investment.
Diplomatic ties between the two countries were recently established on October 6, 2025. Trade activities have since included the Philippines exporting electronic products, machinery, transport equipment, woodcrafts, and furniture to Bhutan, while Bhutan exports wine, fresh grapes, and virgin olive oil to the Philippines. As of November 2025, 335 Bhutanese tourists have visited the Philippines.
Prime Minister Tobgay’s visit coincided with his participation in the Asian Development Bank’s Asia Pacific Food Systems Forum 2026. This diplomatic engagement highlights the expanding relationship between the Philippines and Bhutan across multiple sectors.
