GSIS and SSS Implement Four-Day Work Week to Promote Energy Conservation

In response to government directives aimed at energy saving amid geopolitical tensions, the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and Social Security System (SSS) in the Philippines have adopted a four-day onsite work week starting March 9, 2026.

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and the Social Security System (SSS), two major government-run agencies in the Philippines responsible for administering pension funds and social benefits for government and private sector employees respectively, have announced a shift to a four-day onsite work week effective March 9, 2026. This change aligns with the Philippine government’s broader energy conservation initiatives amidst the ongoing Middle East crisis.

The SSS has detailed a flexible work arrangement (FWA) where its main office in Quezon City will hold onsite operations Tuesday through Friday, with Mondays designated as work-from-home (WFH) days. Similarly, its Makati City office will work onsite Monday to Thursday and switch to WFH on Fridays. Meanwhile, SSS branches continue to offer member services with staggered working schedules Monday through Friday. Members are encouraged to utilize digital platforms such as the SSS website, My.SSS Portal, and mobile app for convenient service access.

The GSIS will observe onsite work from Monday to Thursday, with Fridays as WFH days. Despite the reduced onsite schedule, GSIS service counters, including the lobby and pensioner lounges, will remain open Monday through Friday with adjusted frontline shifts to ensure service continuity. Additionally, GSIS has committed to using its solar power system on Fridays to further augment energy conservation efforts.

This move follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive for executive branch offices to reduce onsite work days as part of energy-saving initiatives amidst regional instability resulting from the Middle East conflict. Other government bodies, including the Supreme Court, have instituted similar four-day onsite work arrangements to support this national effort.
