Philippines’ Comelec Assumes Chairmanship of Global and Asian Election Bodies

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) of the Philippines has taken on the leadership roles of two key international election organizations, aiming to enhance global and regional electoral cooperation.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) of the Philippines announced its assumption of the chairmanship for both the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) and the Association of Asian Election Authorities (AAEA). This marks the first time the Philippines leads both organizations simultaneously, positioning Comelec at the forefront of electoral administration on a global and regional scale.

A-WEB is a worldwide association composed of election management bodies, while AAEA connects election authorities across Asia. The chairmanship is expected to facilitate enhanced partnerships with international counterparts, fostering exchange of electoral knowledge and expertise. Key areas of focus include electoral integrity, technological innovation, cybersecurity, and combating misinformation.

The transition of leadership took place during events hosted by Comelec in Makati City from October 12 to 18, 2026. These included the A-WEB x AAEA International Conference and General Assemblies of both organizations. The conference provided a platform for members to discuss current issues and share best practices in election administration.

Comelec will also present the “Manila Declaration,” which member bodies will formally adopt and sign, underscoring commitments to uphold electoral standards and cooperation.

Comelec Chairperson Garcia emphasized the importance of this leadership in advancing collaboration and strengthening the integrity and modernization of elections across member countries. This development highlights the Philippines’ growing role in the international electoral community.
