Astungkara Way, a pioneering tourism initiative in Bali, has launched the Northwest Bali Trail, a 16-kilometer journey spanning four days that begins in Pemuteran and culminates in West Bali National Park. This trail offers visitors a rare glimpse of Bali’s lesser-known natural and cultural bounty, combining hiking, marine exploration, and community engagement.
West Bali National Park is a critical habitat for the Bali Starling, a critically endangered bird species, and features abundant coral reef ecosystems. This area uniquely combines dry forest, mangrove, coastline, and coral habitats, where local farmers and fishers continue their traditional livelihoods.
The trail, part of Astungkara Way’s series of cultural and nature treks, encourages participants—referred to as pilgrims—to engage deeply with the environment and local communities. Emphasizing Balinese philosophies, slow travel, and regenerative tourism, the initiative supports conservation and sustainable development efforts.
During the four-day experience, small groups of six to ten pilgrims learn about community-led environmental projects, snorkel to observe reef restoration, participate in guided conservation walks within the national park, and engage in mangrove planting activities along the coast. The itinerary also includes farm-to-table Balinese meals where pilgrims gather ingredients in local gardens.
Accommodations include two nights at Menjangan Ecolodge, located inside West Bali National Park, and one night on a community-built open platform near Pemuteran, providing a memorable connection to the landscape.
Astungkara Way collaborates closely with local initiatives involving coral reef restoration and mangrove reforestation, offering tourists firsthand insights from environmental stewards.
